Why Affordable Counselling Doesn't Mean Second-Rate Support

Understanding the placement model and why it works.
One of the most common questions I hear when people enquire about low-cost counselling is some version of: "Is it as good as regular therapy?" It's a fair question, and I want to answer it honestly because the truth is actually really reassuring.
Affordable counselling through a placement model isn't a compromise. It's a thoughtful, well-supervised pathway that gives people access to genuinely skilled therapeutic support at a price that doesn't create financial stress on top of everything else life is already throwing at them.
So, who are placement counsellors?
Placement counsellors are trainee therapists who are in the later stages of their professional qualification. To become an accredited counsellor in the UK, trainees are required to complete a significant number of supervised client hours, and those hours have to be real, meaningful, therapeutic work with real people.
This means that by the time a trainee is seeing clients on placement, they have already spent years studying theory, practising skills, engaging in their own personal therapy, and learning how to sit with another person in their pain. They are not beginners. They are emerging professionals, bringing freshness, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to their clients.
The role of supervision - the bit that makes all the difference
Here's what many people don't realise: placement counsellors don't work alone.
Every client session is held within a robust framework of professional supervision. Trainees meet regularly with a qualified, experienced supervisor, in our case, that's me, to reflect on their work, develop their practice, and ensure that every client is receiving safe, ethical, and effective support.
In many ways, clients working with a placement counsellor are getting more oversight than they might realise. There's an experienced clinical eye on the work at all times, ensuring that any complexity is identified and supported appropriately.
What does this mean in practice for you as a client?
It means you can expect a warm, consistent therapeutic relationship with a counsellor who is genuinely invested in your wellbeing, within a safe and confidential space that meets professional ethical standards. Sessions are informed by up-to-date training and evidence-based approaches, and there is ongoing clinical oversight from a senior practitioner behind the scenes throughout your work together.
What you pay is lower, but the care, the commitment, and the quality of the experience? Those aren't reduced at all.
Why does this matter?
Because the cost of therapy is one of the biggest barriers stopping people from getting the help they need. I started Door94 Affordable Counselling because I believe that financial circumstances shouldn't determine whether someone can access mental health support.
The placement model allows us to offer sessions at a significantly reduced rate without cutting corners on quality or safety. It's a genuine win-win: clients receive meaningful support, and trainees gain the real-world experience they need to grow into the skilled practitioners our profession needs.
